Short answer: a customer engagement platform (CEP) is software that sends the right message to each customer on the right channel, based on what they did, from one customer database. In India, three kinds of product use the name: enterprise CEPs built around a mobile app (MoEngage, CleverTap, WebEngage, Netcore), WhatsApp-first tools (WATI, AiSensy, Interakt, Gallabox), and platforms that run email and WhatsApp journeys together for mid-market teams. Pick the kind first, then the vendor. Two questions decide most of it: is your revenue driven by an app, and do email and WhatsApp need to share one customer record?
This guide is for marketing, CRM and retention leads at Indian companies with roughly 50 to 500 staff and a few lakh contacts, in D2C, EdTech, travel, real estate or SaaS. You have outgrown sending broadcasts by hand, and the next tool you buy will shape your stack for years. We make CampaignHQ, which sits in the third group, so read the comparison with that in mind. We have tried to describe every option by the buyer it fits.
Three kinds of platform call themselves a CEP
Every vendor below now uses the words “customer engagement” and “AI”. The useful difference is what each was built around, because that decides what you pay for and what sits idle.
| Enterprise CEP | WhatsApp-first tool | Email + WhatsApp platform | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Examples | MoEngage, CleverTap, WebEngage, Netcore | WATI, AiSensy, Interakt, Gallabox | CampaignHQ |
| Built around | A mobile app: SDKs for Android, iOS and web, push and in-app messages, product analytics | WhatsApp conversations: broadcasts, a shared inbox, chatbots and AI agents | One contact database with email and WhatsApp journeys on the same triggers, plus SMS and Instagram |
| How it bills | Per monthly tracked or active user (MTU/MAU), mostly quoted by sales | Flat plan, often plus per-agent seats, plus WhatsApp message charges | Published plans by channel, plus WhatsApp message charges |
| Yes | Usually not; email lives in another tool | Yes, including your own Amazon SES | |
| Fits best when | An app drives your revenue and you have the team for a longer implementation | WhatsApp is the whole motion: sales chats, support and broadcasts | Customers buy on the web or offline, and email and WhatsApp both carry revenue |
Sources: each vendor’s own site and pricing page, checked on 2 November 2026 (MoEngage, CleverTap, Netcore, WATI, Interakt, Gallabox). Some WhatsApp-first tools also cover Instagram, web chat or calling. For what the enterprise platforms tend to cost in practice, see our WebEngage vs MoEngage vs CleverTap pricing guide.
Check the billing unit before the feature list
Demos compare features. Your finance team will feel the billing unit. MoEngage and Netcore bill on monthly tracked users, and CleverTap on monthly active users or data points. That unit makes sense when most of your customers open an app every week: the people you track are the people you engage.
It works differently for a D2C brand or a coaching institute whose customers buy on the website and talk to you on WhatsApp. Ask every vendor what counts as a tracked user. Does a contact who only receives WhatsApp count? Does a web visitor who never logs in count? Ask for the quote at today’s list size and at twice that. A flat plan with message charges and a user-based plan can look close today and very different after a good festive season.
The app question decides more than anything else
Enterprise CEPs are excellent at what they were designed for: app push, in-app messages, and product analytics on a large app audience. All four ship SDKs for Android, iOS and the major cross-platform frameworks. If your growth comes from app sessions, that depth is worth paying for, and a WhatsApp-first tool will feel thin within a year.
If you have no app, or an app that few customers open, a large part of the platform will sit idle while you still pay for the implementation. The mistake we see most is a team buying for a future app strategy, then spending the first year running email and WhatsApp campaigns that a lighter tool would have handled. Buy for the channels that carry revenue now. Migrating later is a known project; our retention platform migration checklist covers what moves and what breaks.
Not sure which kind fits your team?
Bring your channels and list size to a demo. We’ll tell you honestly if an enterprise CEP or a WhatsApp-only tool suits you better.
What breaks when email and WhatsApp live in different tools
Plenty of Indian teams run WhatsApp on one tool and email on another, and it works until journeys start to overlap. The problems are rarely the sends. They are the decisions between sends.
Frequency is the first. Each tool caps its own messages, so a customer can get an abandoned-cart email and a WhatsApp reminder within the same hour, because neither tool knows about the other. Opt-outs come next: someone who stops WhatsApp messages is still in the email list as a fully engaged contact, and nobody notices the signal. Attribution is the third. When an order follows a WhatsApp reminder that followed an email, each tool claims it, and your channel budget gets decided on double-counted revenue.
You can patch this with syncs and a shared sheet. The test is simple: can one rule say “if they opened the email, don’t send the WhatsApp” without an engineer? If not, the two channels are not really one engagement program. Our guides on WhatsApp frequency capping and running WhatsApp and email automation together go deeper.
How to judge the “AI” part
Every platform in this guide markets AI: MoEngage has Merlin AI, CleverTap has CleverAI, WebEngage has Atlas, Netcore has a set of named agents, and WATI, AiSensy, Interakt and Gallabox all sell WhatsApp AI agents. The label tells you nothing on its own. Ask what the AI decides and what it needs to decide well.
Predictive features such as best time to send or preferred channel learn from engagement history. They need volume and a varied channel mix to beat a sensible fixed rule. Ask the vendor how much history the model needs, and whether you can see its uplift against a control group. At mid-market list sizes, the AI that pays off sooner is usually the practical kind. Agents answer routine WhatsApp questions. Copilots draft templates and build segments from a plain-English request. AI assistants run the platform for you: several vendors, including MoEngage, WATI and CampaignHQ, now offer an MCP server so tools like Claude or ChatGPT can work inside the account. Our guide to WhatsApp AI agents for retention covers where agents help and where they don’t.
How WhatsApp charges reach your invoice
Since July 2025, Meta charges WhatsApp per delivered message, by category and by country (Meta’s pricing page). One recent change matters for quotes: from 1 October 2026, service replies are free only for the first 1,000 per business phone number each month, and utility templates sent inside an open customer service window are now charged. Some vendor help pages still describe the older rules.
Providers pass these charges on in different ways. Many charge one all-in rate per message and pay Meta themselves. Some add a stated markup on top of Meta’s rate. In others, you pay Meta directly and the provider bills only its plan. CampaignHQ uses the last model, with a published markup in India. None of these is wrong. Ask each vendor which model they use and what the per-message rate is for marketing and utility templates, then compare like with like. The WhatsApp pricing calculator shows current Meta rates if you want a baseline.
A one-week shortlist test
Pick one journey that matters to your revenue, such as abandoned cart, fee reminder, or post-booking upsell. Ask each shortlisted vendor to build it with you, in a trial or on a demo call, using a sample of your real data. Watch for three things: how long it takes to get your contacts and events in, whether one journey can use both email and WhatsApp with one exit rule, and whether the report shows revenue per step without double counting. You will learn more from that week than from a feature checklist. If you need the checklist anyway for procurement, use our retention automation RFP checklist.

Where each option fits
Choose an enterprise CEP like MoEngage, CleverTap, WebEngage or Netcore if an app drives your business, you need push, in-app and product analytics, and you can staff a longer implementation. Choose a WhatsApp-first tool like WATI, AiSensy, Interakt or Gallabox if WhatsApp is the whole relationship, especially sales and support chats, and email is minor. Choose an email and WhatsApp platform if customers buy on the web or offline, both channels carry revenue, and you want one journey, one opt-out and one revenue number without an enterprise contract. If you are weighing CampaignHQ against a specific vendor, our comparison pages for MoEngage and WATI say plainly when the other one is the better fit. FAQs
What is the difference between a CRM and a customer engagement platform?
A CRM stores customer records and helps your team manage deals and conversations. A customer engagement platform uses that data to send automated, personalised messages across channels, triggered by what each customer does. Many teams keep their CRM and connect it to the engagement platform, so events like a sign-up or a payment start a journey.
Is an AI-powered customer engagement platform worth it for a mid-sized team?
It depends on what the AI does. Predictive features need a lot of engagement history to beat simple rules, so check the vendor can show uplift against a control group. AI that answers routine WhatsApp questions, drafts templates or builds segments from a plain request tends to pay off sooner at mid-market scale.
Do I need an app to use a customer engagement platform?
No. Enterprise CEPs are strongest with an app, because push, in-app messages and product analytics depend on their SDKs. If your customers buy on a website or offline, a platform built around email and WhatsApp covers the channels that carry your revenue.
Can I use one platform for both email and WhatsApp?
Yes. Enterprise CEPs and email plus WhatsApp platforms both do this. Most WhatsApp-first tools do not send email, so teams using them run email on a separate tool and have to keep opt-outs, frequency and attribution in sync themselves.
How long does it take to switch customer engagement platforms?
For mid-market teams, plan for a few weeks rather than a few days. Contacts and consent move quickly; journeys, templates and event tracking take longer, and WhatsApp templates may need fresh approval. Run the old and new platforms side by side for one cycle of your main journey before switching off the old one.
