RCS Marketing: How to Plan Your First Campaign

RCS Marketing: Plan Your First Campaign

RCS marketing lets brands send interactive, branded messages through supported mobile messaging apps. Start with one customer journey, a consented audience and verified sender setup. Check actual reach, test the message and any fallback, then measure completed customer actions. Richer messages are useful only when they make that journey easier.

Updated 16 October 2026.

For an Indian retention team already running email or WhatsApp, the question is not whether RCS looks better than a text message. It is whether it helps customers do something useful without adding another disconnected campaign process.

This guide covers that decision, the checks before launch and the evidence to collect from a pilot. It does not assume every contact can receive RCS or that every provider offers the same features.

What is RCS marketing and why does it matter?

Infobip is one provider of business messaging services. As with any provider, distinguish the capabilities of the RCS channel from the features available in your account.

RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. Google describes RCS for Business as branded messaging with rich media, read receipts and analytics on supported Android and iOS experiences. Your business sender is called an agent: the identity customers see in the conversation.

How is it different from SMS and WhatsApp?

SMS is useful for concise text messages. RCS adds richer presentation and interaction within supported messaging apps. WhatsApp is a separate messaging service with its own business setup and rules. An approval or opt-in for one service is not a reason to skip checking another service’s requirements.

Do not choose a channel from a global user count. Ask how many of your consented customers are reachable through the proposed sender and route, and which message features they can actually receive. Google documents recipient capability checks; ask your provider to explain what its reach estimate includes and what it cannot guarantee.

Where does RCS fit in your channel plan?

The Infobip RCS overview illustrates branded messages and interactive formats. Treat those as examples to evaluate, not a specification for every platform or a forecast of your results.

Use email for information customers may need to revisit, and choose a mobile message when a short, timely action matters. Decide the roles together through an email and WhatsApp engagement plan, then assess where RCS belongs. Adding a channel should not mean sending the same promotion everywhere.

What RCS can help a marketer do

Infobip offers examples of business messaging experiences. Evaluate any proposed benefit against your own customer task, audience and operating constraints.

Make the next step easier to understand

A product image or clear action can help a customer recognise an offer and reach the right page. That is a reason to test a format, not proof that it will increase sales. If a short text already explains the task, richer creative may add work without helping the customer.

Give customers a recognisable sender

Zendesk’s explanation of RCS messaging describes the value of recognisable branding. A verified identity helps customers identify the sender; it does not make every link safe or replace responsible handling of personal information.

Keep the displayed business name, website, support details and message destination consistent. Send customers to an authenticated page for sensitive account actions rather than placing confidential details in a promotional message.

See engagement without confusing it with revenue

Delivery, read and interaction signals can show where a journey stalls. They are not completed orders, attended appointments or renewed subscriptions. Agree on the business outcome before choosing the dashboard metric.

How to build an RCS marketing strategy

Braze is another customer-engagement platform to consider when evaluating journey management. Whatever stack you use, decide who owns audience rules, campaign approval and follow-up before adding a channel.

Choose one customer job

For example, an ecommerce team could test helping opted-in shoppers return to an available product. A travel team could test directing interested customers to a booking page. These are proposed pilot scenarios, not customer results or claims that a particular integration is already available.

Define the trigger, the audience, the destination and the stopping condition. A shopper who completes the purchase should leave the reminder audience. For ecommerce teams, the lifecycle email workflow guide explains the event and suppression checks that also matter when planning another channel.

Confirm sender setup and reachable audience

Ask the provider to demonstrate the proposed sender, launch status, supported destinations and formats. Separate a successful test message from approval to message your production audience. For India, confirm the applicable agent category, carrier requirements and any separate registration requirements for an SMS fallback route.

Do not build a launch date around an assumed approval time. Assign an owner for supplying brand assets, resolving approval questions and confirming readiness. A list of phone numbers is not a verified RCS audience.

Check consent before importing a segment

Google’s Acceptable Use Policy requires notice and consent before soliciting users, an accessible way to revoke consent, and compliance with applicable local rules. It also requires brands to respect revocation across their promotional agents.

Keep evidence of what the person agreed to, when and how they agreed, and any later withdrawal. Check whether the existing consent covers the proposed purpose and channel; do not assume an old SMS list automatically qualifies. Give the campaign operator a clear suppression list and test that opt-outs actually prevent the next message.

Ask your legal or compliance owner to review the programme for its destination markets. A generic GDPR or TCPA checklist is not a complete answer for an Indian campaign.

Write a message that can stand on its own

Use a clear sender identity, a relevant reason to contact the customer and one useful next step. State offer conditions before asking for a commitment. The landing page should fulfil the promise in the message, not send the customer hunting through the homepage.

Prepare the plain-text alternative separately if you plan to use SMS. A rich message cannot simply be squeezed into another format without checking meaning, link behaviour and billing. The SMS marketing guide covers the adjacent channel; confirm the actual fallback implementation with your provider.

Launching and improving an RCS campaign

Ask the platform to demonstrate the complete workflow

CampaignHQ supports Email, WhatsApp, SMS and RCS. Its public product pages identify it as a Meta Business Partner, a WhatsApp-related designation rather than proof of RCS approval or reach.

For an RCS evaluation, bring your intended audience and customer task to a demo. Ask the team to confirm the sender setup, supported destinations and formats, campaign controls, reporting and any fallback for your account. Product-level channel support alone does not establish those details.

If an AI assistant is part of your workflow, check the current CampaignHQ MCP documentation separately. RCS product support does not establish RCS MCP actions. MCP access is in beta with gradual enablement, and documented campaign launches require human action in the app.

Test devices, destinations and fallback behaviour

Infobip’s campaign guide recommends checking message rendering and fallback behaviour before deployment. Run those checks with your actual sender, content and destination links.

  • Can recipients read the message and identify the business on the supported devices in the pilot?
  • Does each action open the intended page, with the offer and conditions visible?
  • What happens to unsupported numbers, expired messages or delivery failures?
  • If fallback is configured, what triggers it, what is billed and how are duplicate messages prevented?
  • Does an opt-out stop subsequent promotional messages, including those queued elsewhere?

Do not assume fallback is automatic, free or universally deliverable. Agree on what should happen when neither the primary message nor the alternative can reach the customer.

Connect events before adding automation

A behavioural campaign needs a reliable event, an eligible audience and an exit rule. Ask which events and integrations the platform supports in your configuration. Check how delayed events, repeat events and completed purchases affect the audience.

Keep the first pilot manageable. Someone should own replies and exceptions, not just the send button. Pause expansion if the team cannot explain why a recipient received a message or why they received it twice.

Measure the pilot against a fair baseline

Sureshot’s RCS marketing discussion covers engagement and automation. For your decision, keep message engagement separate from the customer outcome and compare against your existing approach.

Record attempted sends, delivered messages, available read or interaction events, opt-outs, completed actions and total programme cost. Define the denominator for every rate. A click rate based on delivered messages cannot be compared directly with one based on all attempted sends.

Where practical, compare similar eligible audiences with the same offer and timing. If you change the audience, discount and creative together, a better result cannot be attributed to RCS alone. Include operational effort and fallback charges when assessing whether the pilot is worth repeating.

Start with a test you can explain

Sinch’s RCS marketing guide includes provider-reported examples and test ideas. Use outside examples to design questions, not to set guaranteed revenue or engagement targets.

Launch when you can show who is eligible, why the message is useful, how customers can opt out and which completed action will justify continuing. If those answers are missing, fix the workflow before buying more reach.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use RCS instead of every SMS campaign?

Not without checking audience eligibility, sender availability and the job the message performs. Keep a separate plan for customers who cannot receive the proposed RCS message. Replacing a channel is a workflow decision, not a blanket upgrade.

Does RCS marketing work on iPhones?

Google’s RCS for Business overview includes Android and iOS. That does not mean every iPhone, carrier, destination or business sender is supported. Ask your provider to verify the actual route and test the intended experience.

Is an existing SMS opt-in enough?

Check its wording, purpose, channel scope and applicable local requirements. Preserve the consent record and honour withdrawals. If the existing permission does not clearly cover the proposed messaging, resolve that before sending.

What should an RCS quote include?

Ask for the platform charge, setup or registration charges, billable message categories, fallback costs, taxes and treatment of failed or expired messages. Have the provider price your proposed campaign rather than comparing an unexplained headline rate.

Does CampaignHQ’s RCS support include AI-controlled RCS sending?

Do not infer that from product support. Check the current MCP tool catalogue and account enablement separately. Ask CampaignHQ to demonstrate the supported RCS workflow and approval steps for your account before promising an AI-led process.
